Litany for Lent
Jesus of the temptations,
you enter the wilderness
of our hungers,
our lust for power,
our eagerness to test God:
be with us on our journey to Jerusalem, we pray.
Jesus of hopes,
you set aside your glory,
choosing to cradle us
in your scarred hands:
hold us in your tender embrace, we pray.
Jesus of the Feast,
you are broken
so we might be healed,
you pour our your self
so we might be drenched in your grace:
feed us from the simple gifts of creation, we pray.
Silence is kept
Lamb of God:
have mercy.
Servant to the poor:
have mercy on us.
Free gift of our righteousness:
have mercy on us, even as we pray, saying,
(The Lord's Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
We are easily seduced by the temptations all around us. But if we are willing to trust God and offer our confessions, God is quick to forgive us and fill us with hope. Join me, as we pray together, saying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
Led by the crafter of lies, Lord God, we wander into the wasteland of wrong-doing. We hunger for more and more, and feel emptier and emptier. We seek power, especially over others, only to do harm. By our choices, we worship the false gods of success, wealth, and spectacle.
Have mercy on us, God of love, and forgive us for the power we give to temptation in our lives. Help us to become as vulnerable as Jesus, for in that vulnerability, we find the humility to trust you in all things; in that trust, we discover the grace which sets us free from the grasp of the shrewd one; in that freedom, we can leave our badlands behind, in order to follow Jesus in this life, and into the next.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
Be glad and rejoice! Give thanks with shouts of joy! Grace abounds for everyone.
With glad cries of deliverance, we offer our thanks to God who loves us and forgives us. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
Too often, we give into the temptation to keep everything for ourselves. But you would have us notice those how hunger for hope, as well as bread; those who are caught in the injustices of the world; those who struggle to find themselves. And in noticing, we become generous and loving, even as we have been graced by our Brother and Savior, Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May the God of discipleship be with you.
And also with you.
Let us begin our Lenten journey with open hearts.
We offer them to the One who walks with us.
Let our voices resound with thanksgiving to the One who shows us faithful care.
We rejoice in our God of hope and love.
You held nothing back,
Gardener of grace,
as the Spirit led creation
into the hinterlands of nothingness:
spreading rich soil in the valleys,
planting seedlings and flower bulbs,
making mountains from river clay,
sprinkling water over everything.
Mornings came in Eden's beauty,
all that wonder and goodness
given for your children,
but we listened to evil's whispers,
believing those lies so easily told.
Like a crew launching in boat
to rescue those who are adrift,
prophets came, counseling us
to let go of our stubbornness
and return to your side,
but with our eyes wide open,
we followed that path which
took us away from the middle of the garden.
So you sent Jesus to us,
that free gift of grace for all.
With the faithful who have gone before us,
with companions through this journey today,
we offer glad songs of deliverance:
Holy, holy, holy are you, God of steadfast love.
Creation sings your praises as on that first morning.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who brings grace to us.
Hosanna in the highest!
You alone are holy, Hope of our lives,
and Jesus Christ is your blessed righteousness.
When we got what we wanted
in knowing both good and evil,
he came, so we might receive
what we need most - your grace.
When we left the garden
to enter the deserts of temptation,
he came , to show us
the path back to your heart.
When we had given control
of our lives to sin and death,
he came, to break their hold on us
as he was resurrected from the grave.
As we begin to follow him to Jerusalem,
as we would choose to embrace his suffering,
we speak of that free gift called faith:
Christ died, going into the wilderness of the grave;
Christ was raised, shattering the grip of sin and death;
Christ will come, so we might follow him to the New Jerusalem.
You hold nothing back from us
as the Spirit comes to rest
on the gifts of the bread and the cup,
so that those gathered might be fed.
Like your heart, the bread is broken,
so we might be made whole and,
by our healing, go forth
to bring hope to those around us.
Like your Child, the cup is poured out,
so we might be filled with your grace, and
go out into the world
to empty ourselves for others.
And when our journeys in and out
of the wildernesses of the world are ended,
you will gather us around the
great Feast of the Lamb,
where we will sing glad songs of joy to you,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
May God lead us to all who are afraid.
We will follow God into the barren spots of our world.
May Jesus lead us to all who look for a friend, a companion in this life.
We will follow Jesus into all the places where the lonely live.
May the Spirit lead us to all who are tossed aside by the world.
We will follow the Spirit to the neighborhoods filled with injustice, to bring hope.

Liturgy w/communion for February 26, 2017 (Transfiguration - A)
Texts: Exodus 24:12-18; Psalm 2; 2 Peter 1:16-21;
Matthew 17:1-9
in the shelter of God’s love and hope.
It is good to be here with folks we know well, as well as with new friends,
joining with all of God’s beloved, sisters and brothers of Jesus.
It is good to be here, where we can hear God’s voice,
calling us to be eyewitnesses to the Spirit’s presence.
Prayer of the Day
We could build grand edifices
crafted out of our opinions
of how you should act and be,
God of mountains,
or we could gather up
all the broken dreams
of the most vulnerable
to build a more just world.
who have been pushed aside
by those climbing to the top,
Dawn of Hope,
or we could hear songs
of reconciliation and hope
in the lingua franca
of all who seek peace.
We could avert our gaze
from those who have fingers
pointed at them because
of where they come from,
Spirit of love,
not who they are,
or we could catch
a glimpse of you
coming down from the
closet shelf where we put you
so you can be with us.
When we could stay on the mountaintop,
take us by the hand to lead us into service,
God in Community, Holy in One,
even as we pray as we have been taught,
(The Lord’s Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
We wait for God to show up, and while waiting, do not notice the words we might have spoken, the good we could have done. Let us confess to our God, who waits to surround us with grace and hope, as we pray together, saying,
You can take all our foolishness, Creative God, and make us wise enough to see you among us. You take the shards of our broken lives to recast us into a faithful people. You speak gently to us, so we can listen to your dreams of our seeing each person as your beloved, even as Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, sees us through such eyes.
Assurance of Pardon
On mountaintops and in valleys, in moments when our lives are shrouded and as well as when we reflect Christ’s light, God is with us, declaring we are the beloved!
In this moment, in every moment, may we glimpse the grace of God which comes and transfigures our lives. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen.
And also with you.
Let us open our hearts to God who gathers us at this Table.
We delight in the grace which fills our lives.
May we offer our praise to the One who calls us the beloved.
We give thanks to our God of holiness.
You took the shards of chaos,
Repairer of all brokenness
and transfigured them into
mountains where we could draw closer to you,
valleys where we could serve your people,
bright stars of each morning.
These gifts, and so many more, were offered
to the children of dust you call Beloved,
but we joined death and sin
in their conspiracy to make themselves
more important than you in our lives.
You waited for us to return to you,
sending invitation after invitation
through men and women of every age,
but we continued to plot,
listening only to sin’s foolish words.
When you could no longer wait,
you sent Jesus to us,
so we might take shelter in you.
With those who have seen your glory,
with those who hunger for your grace,
we join in praising your name:
Holy, holy, holy are you, God who offers shelter.
We join all creation in glorifying you.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the Morning Star of salvation.
Hosanna in the highest!
You alone are holy, God who laughs
at our foolish posturing,
and blessed is Jesus Christ,
who came to tell everyone of your love.
He could have remained seated in glory,
but chose to walk with us
down this path called life.
He could have remained on the mountaintop,
but came down to minister
to all in despair’s empty valley.
He could have simply told us
how we should live,
but demonstrated genuine love
by dying on the cross, so
death’s power might be broken
by the grace of the resurrection.
As we rejoice in your heart’s Beloved,
as we would listen to him with our souls,
we speak of that transfiguring mystery called faith:
Christ died, breaking sin’s power forever;
Christ was raised, as love conquered death;
Christ will return, to gather all the beloved to God.
Overshadow us with your grace, we pray,
as the Holy Spirit is poured out on us
and the gifts of this holy table.
As you give us the broken bread
to strengthen our service to others,
may we offer hop to all
surrounded by injustice.
As your cup of life nourishes us,
may we see each person,
not as a stranger or outsider,
but part of your beloved family.
And when the waiting is ended,
when the stars of mornings and evenings
shine the way to your holy feast,
we will join our sisters and brothers
in forever singing your praises,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
God sends us from this experience of worship
to serve all those around us.
We will go to take the light of hope
into the shadowed corners in our midst.
Jesus, the Beloved, invites us to join him
in everyday life, in everyday service.
We will go to be blessed by all those
overlooked by the world.
Glory’s Spirit takes us by the hand
to lead us down path of humility.
We will enter into the mists of mistrust,
so we can offer hope to many.

Liturgy w/communion for February 19, 2017 (7th Sunday after the Epiphany/Ordinary 7 - A)
Texts: Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18; Psalm 119:33-40; 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23; Matthew 5:38-48
Call to Worship
We are called to turn the other cheek,
so we will seek to be vulnerable
in our lives of faith and service.
We are called to go the extra mile,
so we will walk with those around us
in the journeys of hope as well as fear.
We are called to love those who make that so hard,
so we will rely on the One who loves us
to fill us with that special grace.
Prayer of the Day
You are the Lord,
Master Builder,
so holy, we cannot understand,
yet you turn the pages
of your heart, so we
might learn to love;
so creative, we stand open-mouthed
in awe and wonder,
yet you teach us the words
which can bring hope
to those who need it most.
You are the Lord,
Wordsmith of new sayings,
so gentle, we think you weak,
yet you dare to love
those who confront you
(even us);
so tolerant, we think you naive,
yet you are wise enough
to always let us make
fools of ourselves.
You are the Lord,
Gifter of wisdom,
so exalted in glory, we lower our eyes,
yet you move into
our hearts in order
to renovate our lives;
so perfect in wonder, we tiptoe away,
yet you stick with us
until we are all
grown-up in faith.
You are the Lord,
God in Community, Holy in One,
and we worship you as we pray,
(The Lord's Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
Because we belong to God, we can turn our gaze away from all that tempts us, and see the One who loves us always. Let us turn our hearts towards God, as we speak of our foolishness and failures. Please join me as we pray together, saying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
We may try to trick ourselves, but we cannot fool you, Wise God. We tell lies about others, and profane your name. We hold onto grudges as if they were the most precious of jewels. We steal another's identity when we ridicule who they are, and we boast about all we are without a nod toward you, who have blessed us.
No matter how often we hurt you, God of grace, you show us your merciful nature. As you seek to teach us your ways, may we pay close attention. As you love us despite our foolish choices, may we be more compassionate toward others. As we seek to follow Jesus, may we be willing to go as far as he will take us, even into that place of hope and peace, which is the realm of your heart.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
This is the good news: we belong to Christ. He is the One who comes bringing life and hope to all.
Because we belong to Christ, we belong to God. The Holy One is also the Merciful One, who fills our hearts with love. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
We will not only offer our gifts but follow you, Gracious God, all the extra miles needed so the hungry might be fed, the homeless might be sheltered, and your compassion would be showered on all those around us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May the God of grace be with you.
And also with you.
We are the people of the Holy One.
We lift our hearts to the One who touches them with hope.
We are children of God, who fills us with joy.
Glad songs of praise are lifted to our God.
You unrolled the blueprints
of creation, Wise Architect,
showing the Spirit the waters to move over,
so whales could spiral out of the sea,
dolphins could whistle your joy,
sea urchins could crawl over coral reefs.
You shared your plans with the Word,
who sang,
and snowflakes drifted downward,
bears hibernated in dark caves,
squirrels jumped from branch to branch.
You did not hoard these gifts
for yourself, but longed to share them
with those created in your image,
but we chose to belong to sin,
who belonged to death.
Gifting the prophets with wisdom,
you sent them to bring us back,
but we continued to turn
our backs on you, bragging of
our imperfections and foolishness.
Then, Jesus came to be with us,
so we might belong to him,
even as he belongs to you.
With those who have gone the distance,
and those who still search for the way,
we sing our praise to you:
Holy, holy, holy are you, Master Builder.
All creation chooses to glorify you.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who loves us.
Hosanna in the highest!
You alone are holy, God of our hearts,
and Jesus is your foundation of hope.
He took off the coat of glory,
so we might be wrapped
in the shawl of salvation.
He turned the other cheek
when sin slapped him,
so we might see what
true obedience looks like.
He went all the way to the cross,
so death might be left behind,
as he walks with us
down resurrection's path
to your kingdom of life.
We would turn our hearts to you,
and belong to Christ, who belongs to you,
as we pay attention to that faith which is a gift:
Christ died, praying for those who persecuted him;
Christ rose, the foundation of our salvation;
Christ will come again, to lead us to the end of our journeys.
Here at this Table of love,
where we share the broken bread
and pass the cup of grace
which have been blessed by your Spirit,
we learn how to be your people.
We go forth to work for justice,
and to share from our abundance;
we will not bear a grudge,
or seek revenge when we are hurt;
we will not tell lies about others,
but love them as deeply
as we love ourselves.
And when we come to the end of the journey,
when enemies gather as friends around your Table,
we will join our hands and hearts,
lifting our praise to you for all eternity,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
Go now, beloved of God!
We will go to love all we meet.
Go now, followers of Jesus!
We will go the distance with the One who shows us the way.
Go now, companions of the Spirit!
We will go, sharing peace and hope with the world.

Texts: Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Psalm 119:1-8; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; Matthew 5:21-37
Call To Worship
As we offer a welcome to stranger and friend,
as we are embraced in their kindness,
we choose to be people of life and blessing.
As we serve others in God's name,
as we receive blessings from those we do not know,
we choose to walk in God's way.
As we forgive those who have hurt us,
as we reach out to those we have harmed,
we choose to be reconciled to our sisters and brothers.
Prayer of the Day
You do not stand there
with a ruler in your fist,
ready to smack our hands
whenever we do wrong,
but are that gentle Parent
who wants only the best
for your children always.
You do not look at us
through the lenses of judgment,
Servant of all,
but see us as your
sisters and brothers
who have wandered away,
and so you reach out
and take our hands so
we might walk together.
You do not hold anything back,
Spirit of goodness,
but you fill our empty lives
with the waters of grace and peace,
so we might overflow with
love, wonder, joy, and hope,
true blessings to the world.
God in Community, Holy in One,
may we choose always and in all ways
to be your people, even as we pray,
(The Lord's Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
With every choice we make, we show how faithful we are to God's hopes for us. Yet, despite the mistakes we make, the missteps we take, God remains forgiving and gracious. Let us come to our God, speaking honestly about our lives, as we pray, saying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
How often we make the wrong choices, God of our lives! We look at others through the prism of lust, distorting who they really are. We let our 'mad' feed us with bitterness and hurt. We toss about harmful words like so many snowballs on a winter's day. We would rather insult those around us, than to lift them up.
Have mercy on us, God who is everywhere. May we set aside our quarreling natures to be united in common worship, common service, and a common purpose, as we follow Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
Christ came, so we might be healed by God's tender touch. Christ came, so we might be reconciled to one another.
Thanks be to God! As risky, as hard as it may be, we will choose to be God's people. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
When we could choose to be selfish, may we share from our abundance;
when we could choose to be hoarders, let us give away all we have;
when we could choose to be broken, let us be reconciled with those around us.
Bless our lives, as well as these gifts, we pray. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May our reconciling God be with you.
And also with you.
Come to the One who loves you always.
We choose to offer our hearts to God.
Come to the Table with glad hearts.
We will offer God praise in these moments.
Heaven and earth are witnesses
to your creation, God of forever,
as you chose to bring forth
life, goodness, and beauty
out of the empty canyons of chaos.
Soft winds rippled grains in meadows,
thunder and lightning echoed your praise,
insects chattered away in hidden places.
All these were blessings - for us, those
who have been crafted in your image,
but we turned away from you,
led astray by sin to worship false gods.
You commanded the prophets to speak,
your words inviting us back to you,
but we chose not to listen.
You sent Jesus to us then,
the One who walked that path called Blameless,
so we might know the way.
So with those who are mature in the faith,
ad those who are just starting the journey,
we lift our songs of thanksgiving:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God who is everywhere.
All creation offers praise to you.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who reconciles us to you.
Hosanna in the highest!
Seeking to be obedient to you,
God of every good choice,
Jesus came,
so we might walk
in his footprints on
that path to life.
He came,
so we could pay
attention to you,
yet not neglect our
sisters and brothers.
He come,
choosing to confront sin
and death on the cross,
so we might receive the
blessing of resurrected life.
As we seek to mirror his faithfulness,
as we would choose to follow him,
we proclaim that mystery called faith:
Though he did not wrong, Jesus died for us;
though we thought him dead, Jesus has risen;
though we have our doubts, Jesus will come again.
It used to be that we had no hope,
but now, at this Table of bread and cup,
your Spirit of grace and joy is poured out.
Filled with the bread which
symbolizes your brokenness,
may we choose to be
reconciled to one another,
honoring all relationships.
As we are transformed by the cup,
may we choose to work together,
so all may be blessed
by your love and peace.
And when you choose to end time,
gathering us together around your Table,
we will join with all those around us,
forever singing your praises,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
Go now, with God's love,
we will choose to be a blessing to others.
Go now, with Christ's hope,
we will choose to serve all in need.
Go now, with the Spirit's peace,
we will choose to share life in every moment.

Call To Worship
As we offer a welcome to stranger and friend,
as we are embraced in their kindness,
we choose to be people of life and blessing.
As we serve others in God's name,
as we receive blessings from those we do not know,
we choose to walk in God's way.
As we forgive those who have hurt us,
as we reach out to those we have harmed,
we choose to be reconciled to our sisters and brothers.
Prayer of the Day
You do not stand there
with a ruler in your fist,
ready to smack our hands
whenever we do wrong,
but are that gentle Parent
who wants only the best
for your children always.
You do not look at us
through the lenses of judgment,
Servant of all,
but see us as your
sisters and brothers
who have wandered away,
and so you reach out
and take our hands so
we might walk together.
You do not hold anything back,
Spirit of goodness,
but you fill our empty lives
with the waters of grace and peace,
so we might overflow with
love, wonder, joy, and hope,
true blessings to the world.
God in Community, Holy in One,
may we choose always and in all ways

Liturgy w/communion for February 5, 2017 (Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany/Ordinary 5 - A)
Texts: Isaiah 58:1-12; Psalm 112:1-10; 1 Corinthians 2:1-16; Matthew 5:13-20
Call to Worship
Called to be light,
we would carry God's hope into
the shadows of the world.
Called to be salt,
we would enhance the lives
of those around us, with joy.
Called to live in God's reality,
we would welcome everyone
as sisters and brothers in faith.
Prayer of the Day
When we see the hungry
and refuse to pass them by;
when we humbly notice
those walking shoeless
in winter
before we repair the holes
in our souls,
we will worship you truly,
God of the Feast and the Fast.
When we think the line workers
are as valuable as the CEOs;
when we give our
in-law apartment
to a homeless family,
we will follow you faithfully,
Servant of the oppressed.
When we mend fences
with our siblings
and build bridges
to our enemies;
when our cries for justice
are louder than a
vuvuzela,
we will proclaim your hopes,
Spirit of justice.
Then we will be like
a royal botanical garden
watered by that grace
which never runs dry,
God in Community, Holy in One,
even as we pray as we are taught,
(The Lord's Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
This is what God hopes for us - that we will speak of the mistakes we make, so we might be forgiven. Relying on the Spirit for the right words, let us pray together, saying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
It is true we break your commandments, God of our lives. Much worse, we break your heart when we point the finger at those who are different from us; when we gossip about our friends and neighbors; when we think everything is all about us.
Forgive us, Loving God, we pray. We long to know your ways, so open our ears to hear those words we always ignore. We search for you each day, so open our eyes to your wonders so we may see them anew. We would believe in your promises, so fill our hearts with the presence of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
God will show us the way to God's realm. Gracious, merciful, and righteous is our God of salvation!
God rebuilds our lives, repairs our mistakes, fills our emptiness with hope and joy. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
May the gifts we offer, Loving God, be used to fix breakfast for hungry children, to shower others with grace, and to patch the potholes poverty has created in the roadways of the kingdom. This we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May the God of the Table be with you.
And also with you.
This is the fast God chooses for us as we come to the Feast,
that we empty our hearts in service, so they may be filled again.
This is the way God offers to us,
We will sing our praises as we journey to the realm of hope and love.
When you came proclaiming creation,
God of wonder,
you brought forth what no eye had seen:
snowflakes drifting in a meadow,
hawks floating lazily in the sky.
You whispered what no ear had heard:
whale songs in the deeps,
a coyote caroling the moon.
You established what no heart believed:
justice for the most vulnerable,
healing for the broken.
Day by day, you called us to your side,
but when evening fell, we slipped
into sin's enticing shadows,
dashing your dreams for us.
You sent the prophets to us,
relying on the Spirit
to give them the right words,
but we did not notice
as we practiced hubris.
So you asked Jesus to come,
dashing the hopes of the wicked.
So with those who do not fear
the good news which he brought,
we lift our voices in glad shouts of joy:
Holy, holy, holy are you, God who shows the way.
Creation joins in praises to you.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who knows your mind.
Hosanna in the highest!
He came proclaiming your salvation,
God of Holiness,
your Child of salt and light.
For those in the shadows
of mourning,
he brought light.
For those whose lives
have crumbled around them,
he rebuilds their hopes.
For those who are separated
by the chasms of fears,
he stretches a bridge
so they can meet each
other in harmony.
For all who face death's
uncertainty,
he went into that unknown,
coming forth to reassure us
that its power had been broken.
As we seek to seem him in our midst,
as we try to hear your Word of life,
we trust in that faith which is mysterious:
Christ died, showing us the way to death;
Christ was raised, showing us the way to new life;
Christ will come, to show us the way to your heart.
Here at the Table of grace,
the Holy Spirit proclaims life,
transforming these simple gifts
and the people gathered in this place.
As we taste the hope in the broken bread,
we would go to
break the bonds of injustice,
and free the oppressed.
As we are filled with the cup,
we would be light to the world,
opening our pantry to the hungry,
wrapping a naked child in our love.
And when God's time is fulfilled
and we are gathered together
with our sisters and brothers
in the kingdom of heaven,
we will not keep any thing bottled up,
but will shout our praises to you,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
To those huddled in the shadows of fear and worry,
God sends to be light.
To those whose lives and hopes have lost all flavor,
Jesus sends us to be salt.
To a society where love is tossed aside as easily as a food wrapper,
Spirit sends us to be faithful carers of everyone we meet.

Liturgy w/communion for January 29, 2017 (Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany/Ordinary 4 - A)
Texts: Micah 6:1-8; Psalm 15; 1 Corinthians 1:18-31; Matthew 5:1-12
Call to Worship
When we seek justice for the other,
when we love kindness more than ever,
we live as God asks us to live.
When we walk humbly through life,
when we offer mercy to those who hurt us,
we are the blessing God hopes we will be.
When we are willing to look foolish by following Jesus,
when we choose weakness rather than power,
we reflect the One who is in our midst.
Prayer of the Day
In the intricacies
of a spider's web,
an OS designer is
put to shame.
In the songs
of a meadowlark,
talk show hosts are
stunned to silence.
In the practical joke
played on Easter,
death
is knocked off its
lofty perch.
In the foolishness of your salvation,
God of tenderness,
you bring us new life.
In your execution
as a common criminal,
rather than dying
as a hero;
in sticking your foot out
to trip the wise,
so the unaware can go
to the front of the line;
in sharing your kingdom
with the outsiders,
while the boasters
fall strangely silent,
your foolishness in becoming human,
Servant of the Blesseds,
transforms our lives.
In those words
which offer hope
to the despairing,
in the quiet whispers
which fill the emptiness
of all who yearn for
righteousness,
in the gentle songs
which can comfort
those whose hearts
overflow with grief,
you are foolish enough
to teach us to speak,
Wisdom of God's Heart,
not with sophisticated logic,
but the simple language of
grace.
Continue to call us to foolishness,
God in Community, Holy in One,
even as we pray as we are taught,
(The Lord's Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
If we want to truly live in God's presence, we must live as God's faithful people. Let us begin by
confessing all the mistakes we have made, the wrongs we have done, the people we have hurt. Join me as we pray together, saying,
Unison Prayer of Confession
What have we done to you, dear God? We dishonor you every time we treat another with disrespect. We shatter your heart when we find it easier to break our word, then to take the risk to keep it. We fill your ears with the gossip, lies, and slander we speak about those around us.
You are wise enough to forgive our foolishness;
you are strong enough to overcome our weakness;
you are loving enough to heal the hurt we cause to you and to others. And so you give us new hope and new life in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
What has God done to us - shown mercy! What has God done for us - forgiven us! This is the good news for us.
We will not boast, for it is not our doing. We will give thanks to God for such grace and hope. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
May we always be foolish enough to offer our gifts to you, Generous God, for you use them to bring justice to the oppressed, to bring laughter to those who mourn, and to offer wonder to little children. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May the God of foolishness be with you.
And also with you.
People of God, open your hearts.
We offer them to the God who transforms us.
Join in singing praises to our God.
With joy and wonder, we lift our voices.
You were foolish enough
to overcome chaos, Wise God,
speaking to hills blanketed with snow,
pleading your hopes before the mountains,
spinning planets into the night sky -
creating all that is wonderful,
including us, people shaped in your image.
But we thought we knew better than you,
running after death's false wisdom,
chasing sin's silly teachings.
Miriam and Moses, Hannah and Micah
were among those your sent
to call us back to your heart,
but we boasted of our exploits,
drowning out their impassioned pleas.
So you sent Jesus to us,
the source of our life and hopes.
With those who wonder what to offer,
with all who seek to worship you,
we sing songs of praise to you:
Holy, holy, holy are you, God of the Blesseds.
All creation rejoices in your saving acts.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One whose weakness is our strength.
Hosanna in the highest!
Holiness is your nature, God of our lives,
and Jesus Christ is your gift of salvation.
Foolishness enough to become one of us,
his wisdom filled every word,
every action.
He left your side in glory,
so we might realize we could build
our lives in your neighborhood.
Weakened by dying on the cross,
he went into the grave,
your resurrecting love strengthening him
to defeat the power of sin and death.
As we seek to comprehend his life,
as we are transformed by his grace,
we speak of that mystery we call faith:
Christ died, humbling himself on the cross;
Christ was raised, filled with your righteousness;
Christ will come, so we may inherit your kingdom.
Here around the Table,
with our sisters and brothers beside us,
your Spirit comes, foolishly transforming
simple, everyday elements into sacred gifts.
We eat the Bread which is broken,
so we can serve your children,
refusing to harm neighbor or stranger,
seeking to treat others fairly.
We drink from the Cup which is blessed,
so we may be foolish enough
to comfort all who mourn,
to believe that peace can be a reality.
And when all human wisdom
is supplanted by the foolishness
of eternal life with you in your kingdom,
we will join with those of every time and place
in singing your glorious praise,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
We have been nourished by God's grace and hope,
and so we will go to those who hunger for justice,
as well as to those who thirst for reconciliation.
We are called to follow the One who is weak and powerless,
and so we will bring healing to the broken among us,
as well as comfort to those who grieve in every moment.
We learn what is right and good from the Holy Spirit,
and so we will go as fools to be blessings to the wise,
as well as to do not what is easy, but what is difficult.

So you sent Jesus to us,
the source of our life and hopes.
With those who wonder what to offer,
with all who seek to worship you,
we sing songs of praise to you:
Holy, holy, holy are you, God of the Blesseds.
All creation rejoices in your saving acts.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One whose weakness is our strength.
Hosanna in the highest!
Holiness is your nature, God of our lives,
and Jesus Christ is your gift of salvation.
Foolishness enough to become one of us,
his wisdom filled every word,
every action.
He left your side in glory,
so we might realize we could build
our lives in your neighborhood.
Weakened by dying on the cross,
he went into the grave,
your resurrecting love strengthening him
to defeat the power of sin and death.
As we seek to comprehend his life,
as we are transformed by his grace,
we speak of that mystery we call faith:
Christ died, humbling himself on the cross;
Christ was raised, filled with your righteousness;
Christ will come, so we may inherit your kingdom.
Here around the Table,
with our sisters and brothers beside us,
your Spirit comes, foolishly transforming
simple, everyday elements into sacred gifts.
We eat the Bread which is broken,
so we can serve your children,
refusing to harm neighbor or stranger,
seeking to treat others fairly.
We drink from the Cup which is blessed,
so we may be foolish enough
to comfort all who mourn,
to believe that peace can be a reality.
And when all human wisdom
is supplanted by the foolishness
of eternal life with you in your kingdom,
we will join with those of every time and place
in singing your glorious praise,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
We have been nourished by God's grace and hope,
and so we will go to those who hunger for justice,
as well as to those who thirst for reconciliation.
We are called to follow the One who is weak and powerless,
and so we will bring healing to the broken among us,
as well as comfort to those who grieve in every moment.
We learn what is right and good from the Holy Spirit,
and so we will go as fools to be blessings to the wise,
as well as to do not what is easy, but what is difficult.

Liturgy w/communion for January 22, 2017 (Third Sunday after the Epiphany/Ordinary 3 - A)
Texts: Isaiah 9:1-4; Psalm 27:1, 4-9; 1st Corinthians 1:10-18; Matthew 4:12-23
Call to Worship
Come out of the shadows and into God's light!
We will not play hide and seek,
but will make a pilgrimage to God's heart.
Lay down all which is a burden to you!
We will give our fears to God,
who is our help in every moment.
Follow the One who will lead you to new life!
We long to live in God's presence
every day of our lives.
Prayer of the Day
Your heart is the shelter
for our weary souls.
You will not push us away,
but clasp us tight in your embrace.
You refuse to abandon us,
standing by our side all our lives.
Time Reaper,
you are our Hope!
When others try to tear us apart,
you pick up the pieces,
making us whole.
When we wonder what
the day might bring,
you whisper, 'follow me,
I will make you
readers to little children,
bandagers of bruised hearts,
lovers of the forsaken,
pilgrims who show the way
to others.'
Time Shaker,
you are our Dawn.
You appeal to us
to set aside all that divides us,
so we might be one.
You send us to proclaim good news,
not with silver-tongued sophistication
but with simple words:
justice
hope
grace
love
which bring light to the shadows.
Time Keeper,
you are our Joy.
From the former times to the latter,
we lift our prayers to you,
God in Community, Holy in One,
even as we offer the words Jesus taught us,
(The Lord's Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
If we come to God with open hearts and honest words, we will not be pushed away, but wrapped in God's loving and forgiving embrace. I invite you to join me as we confess our lives to God, praying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
We admit, God our Light, that we do indeed try to tear Christ apart - a piece of him here to support our politics, a part of him to undergird our economic views, the rest of him to bolster our fears of others. We could leave immediately to follow him, but need to wait until we see where he might lead us. We want you to look upon us with favor always, but have no trouble turning our backs on those around us.
Hear us, God our Deliverer, as we speak of our failures! Have mercy on us, we appeal to you, have mercy! May your love become the core of our hearts, may your compassion become the words we speak, may your hope illuminate the ways in which we serve others, even as we seek to follow the One who calls us to new life, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
God is our help, so why should we be afraid?
God keeps us safe, there is nothing to dread!
This is good news for all of us.
Sheltered in God's gracious heart of mercy
and love, we raise shouts of joy: thanks be
to God, we are forgiven! Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
Use our gifts, Loving God, so others might not be scared by life; so they may be sheltered in the blanket of your grace; so they might find a home with us as their family. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May the God of all time be with you!
And also with you!
God asks one thing, that we offer our hearts.
We lift them to the One who does not abandon us.
Do not turn your backs upon the One who loves you.
We will join in glad songs of joy and wonder to our God.
In that former time, you brought
into creation all that existed
in your imagination, Dawn of Life.
The sun, moon, and stars
illumined the shadows of chaos;
melting snow trickled into creeks
which joined together to rush
to the seas;
every living thing multiplied in wonder,
increasing your joy.
You did this for us, those
shaped in your image and heart,
but when we heard sin calling,
we immediately left your side,
following down death's dusty road.
Longing for us to return to you,
you sent the prophets to us,
proclaiming the hopes of your heart.
Yet we did not listen,
letting evil continue to tear us apart.
Then you sent Jesus to us,
proclaiming that your kingdom had come.
With those who are of the same mind,
with those who long for your presence,
we sing our songs of thanksgiving:
Holy, holy, holy are you, Keeper of our hearts.
All creation joins in shouts of joy to you.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who calls us to follow.
Hosanna in the highest!
You are holy, Shelter of our lives,
and Jesus Christ is your blessed Child of grace.
When he heard your call,
he immediately left glory's side,
to make a pilgrimage to our lives.
When he could have played
hide and seek with us,
he revealed himself as
the Dawn of our salvation.
When he could have abandoned
us to the yoke of sin and death,
he took it from our shoulders,
breaking it over his knees,
shaping it into the cross where
he broke their power forever,
as he calls us to follow him
into resurrection's new light.
As we seek not to divide Christ,
as we long to have the same mind,
we proclaim the gospel which is often a mystery:
Christ died, taking our sins upon him;
Christ was raised, casting off the yoke of death;
Christ will come, so we may live in your presence forever.
We appeal to you, God of our lives,
to send your Spirit upon us,
and upon the gifts of the Table.
As we eat of the bread,
we ask but one thing,
that we might go forth
to proclaim your kingdom with our lives.
As we drink from the cup,
we would make a pilgrimage
to the broken of the world,
so they would know they
have not been abandoned by us,
or by you.
And when the last moments come,
and we are gathered around
that great feast of the Lamb,
our hearts will rejoice in you,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
Let us take God's light into the world.
We will go to join others in pilgrimage of trust.
Let us go to gather the burdens of others.
We will take away their fears and offer them to Jesus,
who helps everyone in every moment.
Let us go to live in the Spirit's presence.
We will follow the Spirit into the peace
which is offered to all of God's people.

Texts: Isaiah 49:1-7; Psalm 40:1-11; 1st Corinthians 1:1-9; John 1:29-42
Call to Worship
We wait patiently for our God.
We will sing, we will sing new songs
of the One who calls us here.
We will not chase after other gods.
We will sing, we will sing new songs
of the One in whom we can trust.
We will tell of all God has done for us.
We will sing, we will sing new songs
of the One whose salvation is for all.
Prayer of the Day
There is none like you,
God of infinite patience.
You promise to listen to us,
always.
You speak more words
of hope and grace
and offer more acts
of mercy and hope
then we can count
on the fingers and toes
of every person who ever lived.
There is none like you,
Shaper of servants.
Gathering up all the words
we should never have spoken,
you rearrange them into
stories of peace and reconciliation.
Sweeping up the messes
we leave littered behind us,
you recycle them into gifts
which soften the hardest hearts.
There is none like you,
Ever-listening Spirit.
You gather up all our cousins
scattered throughout the earth,
bringing us to the Table of life.
You point the way to Jesus
when we have lost sight of him
on the fog-filled days of our souls.
There is none like you,
God in Community, Holy in One,
and our hearts will sing new songs
even as we pray, saying,
(The Lord's Prayer)
Call to Reconciliation
It is clear that God wants to hear our prayers and forgive us, for God is willing to lean close to our hearts to listen to our failures, our poor choices, all the things we have done wrong. Please join me, as we pray together, saying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
You are faithful, Patient God, even as we continue to live in the shadows of life. We could delight in your hopes for us, but choose to do things our way. We could serve the most vulnerable around us, but long to pal around with the powerful. We could share the glad news of deliverance, but prefer to swap stories and gossip.
There is none like you, Redeemer of all your children. You lean over to listen to our prayers, and whisper forgiveness to our souls. You lift us out of the holes we dig for ourselves, and set us on hope's solid ground. You strengthen our weak faith with the life, grace, and love of Jesus Christ, our Lord, our Savior.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
Come, dear friends and receive God's grace; see all the God is doing for you; follow Jesus, as he leads you closer to God.
I will sing of God's love for me;
I will sing a new song of hope and wonder.
Thanks be to God. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
May these gifts we offer, God of new ways, bring comfort to those who grieve; hope to those who live on the streets of despair; peace to all the broken places; and grace to all who long to draw closer to you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May the God of patience be with you.
And also with you.
Offer your hearts to the One who waits for you.
We open them to God, who is our Life.
Come and sing new songs to our God.
We will praise the One who dwells in our hearts.
You saw the emptiness of chaos,
God of before-time,
and so the Spirit and Word came
bearing the gifts of creation:
coastlands lapped by ocean waves;
goats playing king of the mountains;
children laughing in summer showers.
You shaped us in your image, hoping
we would see you wonders,
and stand up to walk with you.
But we chose to follow
those false gods, sin and death.
Women and men came trying
to call your children back home,
but we would not listen to them.
Then you sent Jesus to us,
the Faithful One pointing
out the way for us.
Together with all around us,
with those in every place, from every time,
we will sing our songs to you:
Holy, holy, holy are you, Redeemer of all.
Creation joins in praising your name.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who invites us to 'come and see.'
Hosanna in the highest!
You are the Holy One of all time,
and Jesus is the Lamb who takes
away the sins of the world.
He would not remain in glory,
but came to gather us up
and bring us home to you.
He would not hoard,
but poured out your grace
on everyone he met.
He would not remain silent,
but told us of your kingdom
in our midst.
Despised by evil, abhorred by death,
he defeated their power
by dying on the cross and
being raised to new life for us.
Called to be faithful as he was,
sanctified by his grace and love,
we sing a new song of the mystery called faith:
Christ died, blameless in God's eyes;
Christ was raised, honored in God's sight;
Christ will return, so we will be seen as without fault.
Here your children are gathered, where
the gifts of the Table are offered for all.
Here you bring us together
from every place on earth,
where the Spirit transforms
simple gifts into sacred us.
Here where the bread is broken,
we are strengthened to go
and bring the good news to all.
Here where salvation is poured out,
we are called into fellowship
with those despised by the world,
with those who live in the shadows,
with those who long for someone
to listen to their pain.
And when you have brought all time to an end,
when you gather your children home,
seating us around the great Feast of the Lamb,
we will sing that new, new song of praise to you,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
Having learned new words from our God,
we will go to warm others in the bleak midwinter of life,
to whisper to them of grace and hope.
Having learned new ways to serve from Jesus,
we will go to clear paths for those lost in oppression,
to wait with those in hospital rooms and job lines.
Having learned new songs from the Spirit,
we will go to sing of peace in all the broken places,
to light the way out of the shadows of injustice.

Liturgy w/communion for January 8, 2017 (Baptism of the Lord - A)
Texts: Isaiah 42:1-9; Psalm 29; Acts 10:34-43; Matthew 3:13-17
Call to Worship
Baptized to begin lives of faith,
we would witness to all you do
in our communities, in our midst, in our world.
Baptized to serve,
we would speak up for the voiceless,
we would bring justice to those who have none.
Baptized to speak,
we would heal, and not hurt;
we would bless, and not curse.
Baptized to do what is right,
we would not play favorites,
but treat each as your Beloved.
Prayer of the Day
Your voice thunders in the night,
and sings love songs
in the morning.
Your voice tumbles raging rapids,
and ripples pools of peace.
Your voice snaps trees in two,
and can mend broken hearts
with a sigh.
We give glory to your name,
God of our lives.
Guided by grace,
you became the champion
of justice.
Beloved of the sightless,
you release those
we would shackle.
Broken for our sake,
you shape our souls
into silhouettes hanging
in the Hall of Servants.
We give glory to your grace,
Child of the waters.
You cup your hands
around our flickering faith,
breathing us to new life.
You call us to work for justice,
teaching us intentional
acts of service.
You immerse us in courage,
daring us to speak
words of hope.
We give glory to your love,
Spirit of wonder.
We give you the glory now and always,
God in Community, Holy in One,
even as we pray as we are taught, saying,
Our Father . . .
Call to Reconciliation
Can you imagine a God who would rather forgive us than punish us, who calls us 'my delight,' rather than chiding us for being so foolish and wayward? This is why Jesus came, so we might know of God's tender mercy toward us. Let us confess our lives to the One who fills us with hope, as we pray together, saying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
We try to stop Jesus from coming into our lives, Patient God, for we know how disruptive he can be. He wants us to preach the gospel with our lives, but we prefer to complain how hard that is to do. He wants us to do what is right, yet wrong-doing comes so easily for us. He would like us not to give up until justice is done, but we just don't seem to have the time.
We confess because we know we need to be forgiven by you, Glory and Grace. Bathe us in the life giving waters of your mercy so we can come up from the water, ready to do good for others, to give you all the praise, to learn justice, grace, and hope from your Servant, Jesus Christ.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
You are God's Beloved. You delight God's heart. Believe this good news, my friends!
The Spirit of God rests upon us, anointing us with mercy and peace. Thanks be to God! Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
We leave the waters of baptism to offer grace to others;
we give from our abundance to bless others with hope and healing;
we offer our lives to you and others in serving with love and mercy.
In Jesus' name, we pray you will bless these gifts and us. Amen.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May the impartial God be with you!
And also with you!
Lift your hearts to the One who anoints you with the Spirit.
We come to God, our hearts' true delight.
Sing praise to God, who calls you to the waters of life.
Songs of thanksgiving are lifted to the One who prepared this Table for us.
In a wild whisper
you spoke to chaos,
God of the waters of life,
and your Spirit raced forth,
playing tag with the Word,
mountains shook with thunder,
whales whispered in the oceans,
hawks floated lazily in the skies,
and kittens chased butterflies in fields.
You created us from the dusty earth,
placing us in your garden on wonders
so we might delight in you, and in each other.
But we wandered away from you,
as sin and death took us by the hand,
teaching us to do all that is wrong.
Prophets came in every age
to testify about your hopes,
but we did not want to be
set free from our captivity.
So Jesus was sent, your future
coming over the horizon to us
to be baptized as your Beloved.
With those who bend but do not break,
with those who long to do what is right,
we lift our thanksgiving songs to you:
Holy, holy, holy are you, God of impartial love.
All creation gives you the glory
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who is your heart's true delight.
Hosanna in the highest!
We glorify your name, Holy God,
and bless Jesus, your Child, our Savior.
Lord of all,
he came, not with shock and awe,
but with gentleness and patience.
Light of the world,
he came to fan the spark of justice
until it ignites throughout the world.
Bearer of our sins,
he died on the cross,
snared in death's embrace
until the tomb opened up
and the Spirit came down,
lifting him up, as you proclaimed,
'here is my Son, the Resurrected One.'
As we remember our baptism
into the life and death of Jesus,
we speak of our faith as a mystery:
Christ came, to show us God's love;
Christ was baptized, inviting us into the waters of life;
Christ died, to fulfill all righteousness;
Christ was raised, to set us free from death;
Christ will come to take us by the hand
and never let go.
You spread the Table before us,
the Spirit anointing the bread and the cup
and those gathered in this place
of water and of the Word.
We take the broken bread,
it's healing grace strengthening us
to open eyes blinded by hate,
to free all imprisoned by fear,
to feed those who hunger for justice.
We share the Cup of salvation,
it's tender love nourishing us
to offer balm to the hurting,
to bring light to those who lose their way,
to not give up on the oppressed
until justice is served.
Then, when all righteousness is fulfilled
and we are gathered with our sisters and brothers
from all times and from every place,
we will join our voices to give you the glory,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Sending
Baptized, let us go to live in faith.
We will bring healing to the broken
and offer God's joy to those who grieve.
Baptized, let us go to serve.
At the side of Jesus, we will serve the hungry,
we will give shelter to the homeless.
Baptized, let us go to be a voice.
We will echo the Spirit of calling for peace,
we will never stop speaking against injustice.
Baptized, let us go to do what is right.
Finding you, God in Community, Holy in One,
waiting for us to join you beside all your Beloved children.

Call to Worship
Baptized to begin lives of faith,
we would witness to all you do
in our communities, in our midst, in our world.
Baptized to serve,
we would speak up for the voiceless,
we would bring justice to those who have none.
Baptized to speak,
we would heal, and not hurt;
we would bless, and not curse.
Baptized to do what is right,
we would not play favorites,
but treat each as your Beloved.
Prayer of the Day
Your voice thunders in the night,
and sings love songs
in the morning.
Your voice tumbles raging rapids,
and ripples pools of peace.
Your voice snaps trees in two,
and can mend broken hearts
with a sigh.
We give glory to your name,
God of our lives.
Guided by grace,
you became the champion
of justice.
Beloved of the sightless,
you release those
we would shackle.
Broken for our sake,
you shape our souls
into silhouettes hanging
in the Hall of Servants.
We give glory to your grace,
Child of the waters.
You cup your hands
around our flickering faith,
breathing us to new life.
You call us to work for justice,
teaching us intentional
acts of service.
You immerse us in courage,
daring us to speak
words of hope.
We give glory to your love,
Spirit of wonder.
We give you the glory now and always,
God in Community, Holy in One,
even as we pray as we are taught, saying,
Our Father . . .
Call to Reconciliation
Can you imagine a God who would rather forgive us than punish us, who calls us 'my delight,' rather than chiding us for being so foolish and wayward? This is why Jesus came, so we might know of God's tender mercy toward us. Let us confess our lives to the One who fills us with hope, as we pray together, saying,
Unison Prayer for Forgiveness
We try to stop Jesus from coming into our lives, Patient God, for we know how disruptive he can be. He wants us to preach the gospel with our lives, but we prefer to complain how hard that is to do. He wants us to do what is right, yet wrong-doing comes so easily for us. He would like us not to give up until justice is done, but we just don't seem to have the time.
We confess because we know we need to be forgiven by you, Glory and Grace. Bathe us in the life giving waters of your mercy so we can come up from the water, ready to do good for others, to give you all the praise, to learn justice, grace, and hope from your Servant, Jesus Christ.
Silence is kept
Assurance of Pardon
You are God's Beloved. You delight God's heart. Believe this good news, my friends!
The Spirit of God rests upon us, anointing us with mercy and peace. Thanks be to God! Amen.
Prayer of Dedication/Offering
We leave the waters of baptism to offer grace to others;
we give from our abundance to bless others with hope and healing;
we offer our lives to you and others in serving with love and mercy.
